Tips for Preparing Raw Diets
Raw meat diets, often called BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) are all the rage with some dog owners who swear that raw meat is the only way to feed. This diet will take some research to figure out how to best get your dog all the nutrition that he needs, but here are a few tips.
- Ground meat is generally easier because you can mix in vegetables and supplements, but many diets call for whole raw meats
- Do not overfeed fat
- Soak utensils that come in contact with the raw meat in disinfectant
- Wipe down counters with a disinfectant after preparing raw meat
- Do not feed meats that can cause trichinosis including:
- bear
- pork
- ground squirrels
- fox
