Preparing Fruits and Vegetables
Guinea pigs need a lot of vitamin C in their diet in order to avoid getting scurvy which is a deficiency. Fresh dark greens and fruits have a high vitamin C content and guinea pigs will need more of this in their diet. Rabbits will need less fruit and more vegetables.
Both animals should be given fresh vegetables and fruit daily in amounts depending their dietary needs. Remove fresh food before it spoils. Avoid fruits and vegetable with pesticides.
Don't feed the following:
- Iceberg lettuce (it has almost no nutrients)
- Raw vegetables you wouldn't eat yourself such as potatoes, rhubarb or bean leaves (many of these are poisonous)
- Shelled nuts or seeds
- Long celery stalks (strings are difficult to digest)
- Avocado
- Table scraps
