Preparing Dairy Products for Birds
Many parrots do not get enough calcium in their normal diets. Too much dairy products can cause a problem with digestion in birds, but a small amount can add needed nutrients. Consider adding a small amount of the following to your bird's diet on occasion.
- Dried milk
- Cottage Cheese
- Yoghurt
- Cheese
Provide small amounts and remove promptly if not eaten.
Adding Meat: Protein is generally taken care of in a pelleted diet, but if you are feeding a seed diet, you may want to add some meat. A small amount of the following may be a welcome addition:
- Steak
- Roast beef
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Tuna
- Crab
- Ribs
Avoid bones. Although many people feed chicken and rib bones, some vets have found parrots with impacted crops from bone fragments. Also keep this added protein to a minimum with birds that eat pellets.
