How to Process Vegetables
The best way to serve vegetables to your dog is uncooked. Cooking removes nutrients. Some vegetables may need to be lightly steamed, but only lightly. Too much cooking ruins the point of feeding vegetables in the first place. You also need to chop them as finely as possible or puree them. Dogs are not able to completely digest vegetable material, or cellulose if it is too large, so watch your dog's stool to make sure the vegetables are not passing through. If you are hand chopping, shoot for getting your vegetables about the size of a flea.
- Lightly cook vegetable like squash that are otherwise difficult to puree or chop
- Remove outer layers if the food is not organic
- Puree vegetables
- If you do not have a food processor, grate vegetables and then chop further
- If your dog isn't digesting this finely processed vegetable matter, consider adding a supplemental digestive enzyme to his diet to help with digesting the cellulose
When you prepare vegetables for your dog's meals, you may as well prep in bulk.
