What to do in case of a Fever in Cat or Dog

The quantities that I am going to mention here are adequate for a middle sized dog; therefore, you will have to increase or decrease the amount according to the breed and size of your dog.

First day: three meals a day based only on warm water. You can and a teaspoon of pure lemon per meal. But please, don't use bottled lemon extract or the synthetic one. Throughout the whole treatment, administer two tablets of the anti-septic herbal compounds or garlic tablets as internal disinfectants, in the morning and in the evening. Also, give the animal a laxative substance, preferably seine seedcases. The normal amount is three seedcases placed to soak for about seven hours in two tablespoons of cold water with a pinch of powdered ginger. Do not administer oily laxatives. The laxative must be administered at night.

Second day: the same as the first day, including the laxative at night.

Third day: three meals a day with water and Honey (one teaspoonful of honey for every cup of warm water). Likewise, give your animal plenty of fresh water to drink. Or instead of water, you can use vegetable tea (of different herbs like sage, thyme or marjoram). To this infusion of herbs, add a branch of anti-septic southernwood (a shrubby European wormwood naturalized in North America; sometimes used in brewing beer) -- if you can get it. This plant is very bitter, so only use very little laxative at night.

Fourth day: same as the third day, including the laxative

Fifth day: same as the third day, including the laxative

Sixth day: same as the third day. If the animal's temperature has already gotten normal, approximately 38°C, you can, then, change the intake of honey and water for three small daily meals of unboiled and non-pasteurized cow or goat milk. However, if worse comes to worse, you can use pasteurized milk. Don't use canned milk as the curative qualities are basically nonexistent. In addition, administer freshly chopped vegetables like turnip and watercress -- a teaspoon after the meals. The recommended times for the meals are eight o'clock in the morning, twelve o'clock at midday, and six o'clock in the afternoon. At this stage, you should stop administering the laxative.

Seventh day: same as the sixth day.

Eighth day: same as the sixth day, but modifying the evening meal, adding to the milk and honey some cereal flakes (about a handful), preferably barley; otherwise, use oatmeal.

Ninth day: same as the eighth day, but instead of one handful of cereal flakes, make it two.

Tenth day: same as the eighth day, but this time giving even more cereal flakes than the previous day. You can sprinkle the cereal with whole-wheat -- about a tablespoon. You can add a couple of sliced raisins.

Eleventh day: same as the tenth day.

Twelfth day: suspend the eight o'clock in the morning meal and replace the midday meal with a bowl of boiled fish sprinkled with whole-wheat bran and oat flakes.

Thirteenth day: same as the eleventh day.

Fourteenth day: same as the eleventh day.

Fifteenth day: same as the first day. In other words, fasting on water, taking a rest and disintixicating the system again.

Sixteenth day: same as the twelfth day, although adding other cereals to the meal of milk and barley – preferably oatmeal, rye, etc. From now on, you can also give them whole-wheat bread or whole-wheat cookies.

The dog should now be ready to continue with his natural diet. That is, eating raw meat and so forth.

An additional ingredient that is very important now is oxygen, which can only be obtained by means of exercise and running in the open.

Note: Keeping up with this diet is totally up to the sick dog owner's discretion. You must always bear in mind that this diet depends on the temperature and that the presence of any state of fever has to be treated by means of fasting. You should also be very careful with the end of the fasting period. You shouldn't allow more than the normal amounts of solid food in the diet. Letting your dog "pig out" after a long fast based on liquids could have a fatal outcome. The fasting period has to end in a very cautious and soft way, administering only small quantities of solid foods during the first few days. During the fast, you are allowed to give your animal fruit juice, especially of lemon, grape, apple and gooseberry. But don't give any tomato or orange juice to your dog as none of them are healthy foods for a sick dog.
