Naturally Treating Hernias in Cat or Dog
Hernias, both in dogs and cats, are normally related to the umbilical. In the cat, however, this can be due to congenital reasons, whereas in the dog it is generally caused by the clumsy way the mother moves around during a moment of birth, causing the puppies to get a hernia. The umbilical hernia occurs when, under the skin although through the umbilical cord, a piece of intestine comes out. I do not suggest a surgical treatment for hernias because it can cause serious internal damages.
Treatment: I learned a surprisingly simple treatment when I was visiting a colleague in Romania. You place the puppy on its back, then just firmly press one of your fingers on the hernia, which will go back to his place, like a pressure button. It is a system that most usually has a permanent effect and it only takes about a minute. In this fails, apply an extract of hamamelis, which is an astringent with castor oil.
Lastly, I must mentiomn the factor of prevention. Don't let the mother treat her puppies rudely when giving birth. She might throw them or step on them in her nervous state, especially if it's her firest time. Therefore, remain at your dog's side during the whole birth process. Try to keep her calm and place the puppies at a distance in a comfortable mat. When she has finished giving birth, she can return to their side.
