Giving Water to your Dog
The body of human beings and animals is composed of approximately 70% of water; and a dog, concretely, it eliminates every day a large quantity of water by the lungs and urinary organs. The urinary elimination is especially important after intense physical exercise. Therefore, it is necessary for the maintenance of good health that the water of the body be renovated constantly by drinking it regularly. Dogs, especially when they're sick, can survive for weeks without eating any food, but they wouldn't be able to do so for more than a few days without water. Of course, there have been some exceptions to this statement: there have been cases where dogs fell into holes in the ground or they got lost inside a minute or were trapped inside a bombed building, etc., who are able to survive for weeks on end without drinking water.
In order to assure good health, the water, that the dog drinks every day, must be pure and natural, in the past when a used to buy greyhounds establish my own line of dogs, one of my first worries was related to the source of water that the breeder had. I always looked for dogs that came from a countryside environment, of established breeders that lived on farms where there was good water. A famous horse breeder once told me that he couldn't imagine raising in his horses on lands where he did not have a steady flow of fresh water. His ambition was to get strong bones for his racehorses' legs, and he believed that without a good source of water it would be impossible to achieve.
In this modern civilization is always more difficult (if not to say impossible) to find chlorine and fluorine free water. When I was faced with the fact of not having any more water than that which was immensely treated with chemical products, on my trips, I had to buy bottled spring water for my sons and animals before letting them poison their blood. I usually buy water in glass bottles, and it has been proved that plastic recipients have a bad effect on one's health.
The water that is given to dogs must be changed twice a day. The recipients have to be placed in the shade. You can also gather rainwater, just as long as you don't leave in a polluted area; in other words, as long as the rain is clean, gather it. Be careful as well with radioactive rain.
Don't let the dog drink water immediately after having eaten, because that leaves the food that he has just eaten in a semi-digested state in the lower part of his intestines, which can produce indigestions and bloating. From a very tender age, and in most cases much before they are weaned, puppies need to drink water; it is necessary, therefore, that you've given it to them in shallow bowls (as soon as they have opened their eyes). They look for and lick up the dew deposited on the plants and herbs; that is an attitude that you must encourage. The fact that the puppies our drinking water also lets the breast-feeding mother conserve her milk.
