Dog Mastitis

It is a very uncommon state in dogs because she, unlike cows and goats, can give her puppies her milk in a natural way, and is not subject to milking machines, etc. The pain occurs when weak puppies that can not vigorously suck on their mother's breasts and, therefore, do not empty them many times a day. This produces congestion, which leads to the development of mastitis. The symptoms are the swelling up and hardening of the secretory glands, and there often is some fever. Generally, the mother will not allow her puppies to suck on her, because it causes great pain, which is in turn caused by congestion.

How to treat this: you must separate the bit puppies from the side of the mother and, during that period, bottle feed them. The mammary glands have to be totally emptied by means of manual pressure, first applying on the breasts rags soaked in hot sage. Do this 4 to 5 times a day. You also have to clean the area of the milk glands with an infusion of elder tree leaves -- one bundle of those leaves in approximately three quarters of a liter of water. For one day, you have to give her an internal treatment of a water-based fast, along with four tablets of the anti-septic vegetable composition twice a day (for a medium-sized dog); also give her a laxative during the night and after that a liquid diet of milk and honey for as many days as it takes for her to get better; after that, the puppies can normally breast-feed.
