Cat Claws
The claws on the cat are vital. In spite of their size and weight, the cats are brave fighters. Without their claws, they become defenseless.
In the past, veterinarians use to give advice on how to keep the claws in a good state, covering them with oil and trimming them. Now veterinarians are suggesting these be removed by means of a dangerous surgical intervention. This is done to "prevent" the cat from scratching the owner and home furniture.
But let me tell you one thing: it's basically the same thing as plucking out one of your fingers. This is because cats not only use their claws to kill the prey which will be their food, but also to clean their bodies and to untangle their hair, among other things.
The good thing is that this intervention is actually quite expensive and many veterinarians, luckily, advise against it. However, there are still a good number of cat owners who go ahead with the operation without knowing that they're causing a lot of harm to their animals. A cat that has no claws tends to be depressed and mentally unstable; he will never again be a happy house cat.
As for your furniture, you simply have to separate a corner of the house where your cat can scratch as much as he wants. Likewise, you must teach him that he mustn't scratch your expensive home furniture.
And about the cat scratching his owner, I suggest you never try to grab him by force, against his will; instead, just let him walk around freely. And never remove the food from your cat when he is eating: you are surely to get scratched.
