Free Pet Insurance

Not too long ago I came across an animal shelter that was offering free pet insurance to first time pet owners that got their pets from the shelter. Free pet insurance is a good idea as long as the animal shelters encourage the adoption of shelter animals by responsible persons. In many shelters you are invited to visit the animal shelters to select a pet from the variety of animals normally available for adoption. Most animals that are housed at the shelter are abandoned or have been surrendered to the shelter for a variety of reasons. The reasons vary but most of the time it is due to expectations of the owner and not the animal itself. Cute puppies can grow up to be big dogs. Small kittens grow up to be big cats. Inadequate space for the animal is another reason why owners surrender them to the shelter. If you live in an apartment or a dwelling without a yard, please consider a small inside pet that does not require room to run and can play indoors. If you rent, please check with your landlord or rental agreement prior to adopting a pet. Introducing a new animal to your home for the first time is exciting, but can also be stressful. Take it slowly and keep in mind that it will take time for the two of you to get to know and understand each other's personalities and expectations. If you adopt a puppy, remember, they have to chew to obtain healthy teeth. Give them a chew toy or an old discarded child's toy to play with. Be tolerant and remember that obedience training is the best thing to do for you and your pet. Spaying or neutering animals before they have puppies or kittens is an effective method of controlling animal population. Your veterinarian can perform this simple medical procedure that promotes animal health and prevents the birth of additional animals for which good homes may not be available.
