Sicilian Greyhound a Hunting Dog BreedThe Cirneco dell'Etna is recognized by the FCI (Federation Cynlogique International) it is classified in the 5th group as a "primitive hunting dog". Because this breed was originally bred as a hunting dog it will possess the temperament of a hunting dog, and while they do make good pets they do have considerable energy. Like other hunting breeds they will also display a strong prey drive and for this reason they should not be walked off the leash and should be supervised around unfamiliar animals. This breed is very friendly and likes to be part of the family. They particularly enjoy snuggling up in a warm bed with their owners. Although they do form close bonds with family, they tend to be wary of strangers and should be well socialized from an early age. This breed does not always do well in the cold and they may need a jacket if they are kept in cold climates. The Cirneco dell'Etna has a primitive appearance that resembles ancient Egyptian hounds. The Cirneco has a light, square body with a sleek, short, smooth but hard coat. They are accepted in fawn, the exact tone may vary. They are also accepted in fawn with white markings on the head, chest, feet, belly and the tip of the tail may also be marked in white. Markings in other places are generally not encouraged. They are also seen in white or white with orange patches. One of the most noticeable features about this breed is their striking ears, which stand upright on the head. The standard is for males to be larger than females, generally from 46 to 50 centimeters in length with females measuring between 42 and 46 centimeters. |
