French Braco as Hunting DogIn France, a country well known for producing a wide variety of excellent hunting dog breeds, there are seven recognized variations of Bracos: Charles X (large and small), Dupuy, Bourbonnais, D'Ariege, Saint Germain and Auvernia. Most of these breeds are almost unknown outside of their region of origin with the exception of the Saint Germain Braco and the Auvernia Braco who are both known and valued for their prowess as hunting dogs in all of Europe and even in somewhat in America. In general all the varieties of French Bracos have descended from the same blood line, that of the oldest of the French Bracos the Charles X. Due to the fact that most of these breeds are virtually unknown outside of their regions we will not go into detailed descriptions about their various physical characteristics and hunting strengths and weaknesses as it would be a time consuming task that would yield little benefit to either the writer or reader. However since the Saint Germain Braco and Auvernia Braco are well known and gain popularity we felt it best to include a section about these two great French hunting dog breeds. Although it is true as we stated above that these seven varieties of French Braco share the same basic heritage we do not mean to imply that they are all the same or that they have similar physical characteristics or hunting abilities. They are each very much their own breeds with each having unique strengths and weaknesses both in their physical build and in their abilities as hunting dogs. |
