Auvernia Braco as Hunting Dog

Together with the German Braco the Auvernia Braco is considered by many to be the most outstanding of the Bracos. This variety of Braco, which sometimes also goes by the name of Blue Auvernia because of the light blue tones that appear on its white and black speckled coat, comes originally from the region in France from which it has acquired its name, Auvernia. Overall the Auvernia Braco is a dog that is smart, has a keenly acute sense of smell, quick pace, works exceptionally well on all terrains, including boggy marshes and hunts rabbit and other small game well. Possesses an indefatigability that is the envy of other hunting dog breeds is a great retriever and a consistently accurate pointer. Obviously a dog with all of these qualities makes a great hunting partner for any type of hunter. Its large head has only a slightly depressed stop. Its face should always be black with a square looking muzzle. This squared appearance should be obvious both when looking at it from the front or side. Its large ears hang down close to its face and its eyes are dark brown in color. The tail is always docked (amputated) about 15 to 20 cm. from the base and is normally in a horizontal position. The average height of the male is 60 cm. and the female 55 cm. with an average weight of 20 to 25 kg. The Auvernia's limbs are solid and strong giving the dog an overall strong and robust (but not coarse) look. It has a slightly rough short coat that is white and thoroughly speckled with many small black spots. As we mentioned before its face should be black. There are some Auvernia Bracos that are speckled brown as opposed to black but these lose the blue tone and so are not referred to as Blue Auvernia.
