Work dogs, Working DogsUnlike company dogs (which have a more passive role always dependent on their owner), work dogs and working dogs are active, since they have a specific function and require certain physical and character characteristics, depending on the tasks it must accomplish. Guard dogsThe guard dog must have an imposing appearance and a strong character. A fundamental condition for them is being well balance and sure of themselves. Their mission is to defend closed premises – which they consider their territory – from intruders. If it is well trained, there is no reason why they should attack outside of its territory. The most common breeds used are the German Shepherd, Boxer, Giant Schnauzer, and the Rottweiler. All dog breeds. Hunting dogs There are three different groups: show, track and retrieve. In some cases these characteristics are found in the same breed. The tracking dog is best known for its sense of smell. Not all dogs are good at tracking, even though they are of a tracking & hunting dog breed. The most common are the Hound, Pointer, Braco, Springer Spaniel, Cocker, Beagle, Labrador, Golden Retriever, Podenco and any crossbreeds from these breeds. However, its sense of smell isn't the only import part, since the dog also needs to know how to hold the prey in its mouth without out biting or damaging it. A good tracking dog requires long and patient training which can take several months. Dogs for self defense The dogs that work best for self defense are those that show certain shyness, but are not aggressive and are in general very dependent on their owner. Because they feel safe in their presence. This combination gives them emotional stability when they are with their owner; therefore they are capable of defending them from any attack when ordered. Without a guide they feel helpless and useless, but when they are accompanied by their owner they feel secure. Dogs that are used for self defense must be trained by professionals; they must be taught to stop attacking as soon as they are told. These dogs only work in an emergency and need a responsible and well balanced owner. The breeds which are used for self defense the most are the Doberman, German Shepherd, Malinois, Bobtail, Brie Shepherd and the Airedale Terrier. |
