When a dog has something blocking its airways it will usually try and get it out either by using its paws or trying to vomit. Also a dog that has something stuck in its throat will whine as in pain and will salivating excessively.
Attempting to remove the blockage with your fingers could result in the dog accidentally biting you so this should only be done in extreme cases.
The quickest, safest and fastest way to remove anything that might be blocking your dog's throat is by performing the Heimlich maneuver on it.
Once the object has been removed check your dog to make sure that they are breathing normally and if you find that your dog is still not breathing well or has no pulse then begin artificial respiration or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation right away. Seek immediate medical attention.

Heimlich maneuver for dogs: Follow these steps to perform the Heimlich maneuver on your choking dog. The size of the dog will affect the exact positioning of your hands. Place your arm around the dog's chest letting the head and shoulders hang over it. Close your hand to form a fist and bring your other hand around and cover your fist with it. Your two handed fist should be placed between the dog's lower tummy and its rib cage.
Then quickly and firmly thrust your two handed fist inwards and upwards.
Repeat as often as is necessary to dislodge whatever is blocking your dog's airways. If your once you have removed the object your dog is still not breathing then begin AR (artificial respiration) and if it has no pulse CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation). Seek immediate medical attention.
