 | Dog Anal Gland The veterinarian says my dog has obstructed anal sacks and they must be vacated: Dog Anal glands are really sacks that produce a secretion that i s placed in the dog's poop, and may be identified by other dogs. Probably the first symptom of an obstruction is that the dog rubs his back legs with the floor, trying to overcome irritation, but this will only cause him more pain. He could even try to bite himself. Vacating the sacks before defecation is painful, and the zone is infected. In serious cases, open channels (fistulas) can be produced around the anus, very difficult to cure completely, and usually need cryosurgery. The veterinarian can empty the sacks with his hands, but in serious cases, anesthesia will be needed. Then sacks can be washed avoiding repetition. In chronic cases, it could be necessary extirpation of the sacks, but try to add bran to the dog's food, this improves the cellulose level of the diet, and helps with these problems. A majority of dogs have survived to the use of these glands, which are not regarded as mortal. Are females more prone to urine infections than males? |
