Train Dog to “Stop” in a line of Dogs

Practice "Stop" with dogs in a line

Practice "Stop" with dogs in a line. For this practice four dogs need to be sitting in a parallel line looking forward. The dog trainers stand in front, at about fifty or sixty feet away from the dogs. In the middle a transversal line must be marked by using a rope, with posts on the right and left. One by one the dogs will be called on and stood in line by telling them to "Sit", or "Down". As soon the last dog has stopped at the line all of the dog trainers can then go back to their dogs.

Practice "Stop" with a dog from a distance. These exercises are intended for those that want to be able to manage their dog from a distance. The idea is that the dog learns to obey their masters commands even when they are a ways away and to pay attention to and keep a sharp eye out for their masters commands and signals. The command "Stop" should be

practiced both as the dog is approaching the trainer and as the dog is going away from them. It is never a good idea to over practice the command "Stop" or even to over use it as the dog will begin approaching (or going away) slower and slower with ever less enthusiasm and confidence.
Although it is crucial that the command "Stop" be given with a loud and authoritive voice (if you hope to have it cause the desired affect) it is important that you not be too hard, tough or mean (or sound too hard, tough or mean) on sensitive dogs.

Practice with "Stop" at a specific location. For this practice four or two dogs need to be sitting in a parallel line looking forward. The dog trainers stand in front, at about fifty or sixty feet away from the dogs. In the middle there can be a tree, a bucket with food in it, you can use a post, dog toys, a stuffed animal, or any other variation that occurs to you. One by one the dogs will be called on and must be told to stay there by telling them to "Sit", or "Down". As soon the last dog has stopped at the goal, the dog trainers can then go back to their dogs.
