Leaving your dog home alone.
It's important that a puppy learn to stay alone during the day. Teaching him this will help him get a sense of independence which will help him not suffer from anxiety as an adult. You must gradually train your puppy to learn this behavior. The first things you can do is put the puppy inside his crate and go on the other side of the door, you should then close the door and leave the puppy there for a couple minutes. Little by little you should go increasing the time you live him alone starting by a couple minutes and working your way up to an hour. If the puppy starts howling don't run in to console him. In these cases, you must wait until he has stopped and then go in and prize him for the good behavior.
Questions and answers
Q: Whenever I try to groom and brush my dog's coat, he growls and bites at the brush. What should I do to resolve this problem?
A: It's very important to use the right kind of brush, perhaps you are hurting your dog with the type of brush you are using. Ask your veterinarian what type of brush you should use for your specific breed. If this is not the problem, your dog's attitude could be caused by a lack of discipline in general, and it's very important you take care of this problem as soon as possible. You should ask someone to help you by holding the dog by placing one hand over the dogs head and under his neck and the other hand under his stomach. Start out by only grooming the dog for about five minutes at a time and then prize him when you are done.
Q: We have a puppy that is constantly chewing at everything like our furniture, shoes and clothes. Whenever we try to take these things away from him, he growls at us. What should we do to solve this problem?
A: The best way to solve this kind of problem is to not leave those things at the puppy's reach. Teach your puppy instead, to bring things back to you, by playing fetch with a ball etc. Training a dog to learn this will probably take some time and you will need to be patient and prize him every time he does what you want but with time you will see he will give you back the objects he has taken from you.
