If your dog is going through any of the following points, you must take him to the veterinarian.
- If there is blood in the dogs urine. You will be able to notice this by seeing if the urine is reddish; it also sometimes looks like there are "strings" of blood in the urine.
- If the dogs urine smells very strong and/or is darker.
- If the dog is urinating more than usual.
- If the dog looks like he is having difficulty urinating.
- If the dog tries to urinate but nothing comes out. (Take him to the veterinarian immediately).
- If the dog urinates more than normal and drinking more water than usual.
- If the dog starts peeing in the house.
- If the dog wets wherever he has been sitting
- If the dog urinates when he is excited.
DogQuestions and Answers
Q: How do you get a urine sample of a dog?
A: Start off by keeping your dog inside your house until you are sure he needs to urinate. Get the urine from the dog by using a clean wide and flat container and then pour this into a sterilized glass jar. The veterinarian will only use about a spoon of the urine for the analysis.
Q: My cocker spaniel Nell had to get operated because he had bladder stones. What can I do to avoid him from getting them again?
A: Make sure your dog always has access to plenty of water so that he urinates more. This will eliminate any small stones that may form in his bladder again. Your veterinarian will fill you in on how you can help your dog and he will probably put Nell on a special diet.
