Spanish Mastiff Dog Breed Information
The Spanish Mastiff dog is the king of the mountains, most loved by sheep and feared by wolves. A very noble and powerful dog.
Height, weight: more than 72 cm, in females, and more than 77 cm in males. Weight is equally proportioned to the size.
Fur, color: bushy hair, under hair as well. Can be all different colors, its mixtures are - tawny, striped, black and painted -these are the most common.
Appropriate for: people with ample and quiet places. Recommendable for a house with a big yard, but where it feels more at home is at a farm. Not Appropriate for: those who live in the city or in a small house.
As a member of the family: an honorable protector of children. Gentle, but only until it has to show its real power, which is why it is recommendable to not allow strangers get close to it. A very good watchdog, and hardly bothers with its barking, although when it really does bark, it's loud and impotent. Needs little care when its grown up.
Breed's character: noble, prudent and majestic. Is not really for games, but has a lot of patience. During centuries, it has been a keeper over sheep, when the herds were out looking for greener pastures. In some cases, its days journey would be 20 km, adapting itself to the changes of weathers, and always attentive, as not to be attacked by wolves or even bears. Distrustful with strangers.
Common sicknesses: hip disorders and gastric torsions.
Life expectancy: up to 10 years.
