SMALL DOG BREEDS
If you live in an apartment, you may consider getting a dog of the small breed type. These small dog breeds are those of about 10, or less, inches tall (average). They can adapt better to a limited space, be easier to handle and require less space to life. So maybe a small dog breed could be a great option for you. Just be careful and spend some time searching for the most suitable breed for you in terms of personality and most of all, in case you have kids because some of these breeds are not particularly fond of children.
One thing to consider is that this kind of dogs eat a lot less than the medium or large breeds dogs, which mean you would need to pay special attention to their nutrition and make sure they will receive the correct amount of nutrients in smaller portions to insure the dog's proper development and health.
Some of these breeds were first bred for companion purposes, specially the toy dog group and others for hunting purposes.
The small dog breeds recognized by the AKC (American kennel Club) are the following:
- Maletese (belonging to the toy group).
- Manchester Terrier (belonging to the terrier group).
- Mastiff (belonging to the working group).
- Miniature Bull Terrier or Mini Bull (belonging to the terrier group).
- Miniature Pinscher (belonging to the toy group).
- Miniature Schnauzer (belonging to the terrier group).
- Harrier (belonging to the hound group).
- Havanese (belonging to the toy group).
But they are not they only ones. Here are some other small dog breed names you may want to read about in order to define which one is the best for you.
