Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu Dog Breed Information

The Shih Tsu is an ancient breed originated in Tibet where the monks raised it to act as guard dogs in their monasteries. Thanks to some English explorers this breed was brought to the West in the beginning of the 20th Century. Since then breeders have sought to refine the Shih Tzu's looks and with the result that it now normally has a longhaired silky coat. Intelligent and obedient this breed bonds well with all members of the household. However they have a very independent nature and need to be trained from puppyhood.

Need for Exercise: Though they don't need a lot of exercise, they do need to be walked at least a couple of times a day to help them avoid becoming

overweight.

Specialized care: Their thick long coat needs daily combing and brushing as well as regular grooming. It is important to keep their eyes clean and dry to prevent infections and keep the hair out of their eyes with ribbons or hair elastics. The hair on their paws and in between their toes should be trimmed regularly to avoid knots and dirt balls forming. They love to eat and if their diets are not planned well they will quickly become overweight.

Minimum height:

  • Males and Females: 26 centimeters and 5 to 8 kilos

Appropriate for: The Shih Tzu makes for a wonderful companion dog although it needs to live with people that are able to dedicate the large amounts of time and attention that it needs. They need long walks and lots of grooming daily. Though it is friendly with children and other animals it doesn't always do well living with them.
