Sheltie potato stew recipeThe Sheltie: The ancestors of the mini Collie were brought over to the Shetland Islands from mainland Scotland and crossed with smaller breeds that produced the Sheltie that exists today. The environment these dogs used to live in was harsh, cold and rugged because there were frequent storms. The Shetland Islands is rocky and there is little vegetation. This environment toughened the Sheltie. Part of the reason that they were crossed and made smaller was due to this factor. A lot of herding dogs were brought up in these islands, and in Ireland and Scotland. Their diet mainly consisted of potatoes and milk, which is what their masters ate as well. Ingredients 4 big potatoes 1 tablespoon non salted butter 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 cup milk Salt Ground black pepper 1 hard boiled egg, chopped coarsely 1 tablespoon parsley, choppedScrub the potatoes and put them in a large pot with cold water covering them. Boil them over high heat for about 30 minutes, or until they are tender. Drain and reserve once done. Melt the butter over low heat in a small pot. Once melted add in the cornstarch and cook, constantly stirring until the cornstarch is golden. Stir the milk in slowly, use a whisk to mix and cook until the sauce is thick. Add in salt and pepper to taste. Cut the potatoes into small pieces and put them in the dogs bowl. Add in the chopped egg, parsley, and sauce. Mix well and serve hot. Makes approximately ½ kilo. |
