Separation Angst

Some dogs experience what is known as separation anxiety and is prevalent in some dogs that are left alone. Usually what occurs is that the dog panics, however there are others that don't show any signs of anxiety at all but do have it.

There are different reasons a dog can experience an anxiety attack but basically it happens to dogs that are left alone and just can't seem to deal with being left on their own. One thing that can cause a dog to become anxious is a sudden change in the environment the dog is used to.

Anxiety can sometimes be seen when a dog becomes destructive in the house when everyone is out. Chewing furniture, urinating and doing its needs inside the house, knocking things over, etc are all signs of depression and anxiety. There are certain ways of dealing with these types of problems suggested:

  • Don't make a big deal out of leaving your home. Avoid baby talking to the dog and making a big stink. Just leave the house.
  • Leave a stuffed animal or piece of clothing of yours thrown on the floor where your dog can easily lie over it.
  • Leave the TV or radio on (low volume).
  • Leave your dog some special treats or toys that he can easily access.
  • Train your dog to be left alone by practicing leaving the house for a few minutes and then coming back into the house without paying any attention to him. Little by little go increasing the practice times.
