Dog Self-Discipline exercise

If dogs are allowed to make choices and are rewarded for good ones and suffer consequences for bad ones, they will learn self-discipline more readily. The following is an example of an exercise that will help your dog learn self-discipline.

  1. Keep your dog on a leash while you greet a visitor.
  2. The guest leaves if your dog jumps.
  3. You click and treat and the guest stays if your dog didn't jump but rather sat
  4. Your dog is learning by trial and error how to act with a visitor and get the attention he desires.
  5. You provided the information by clicking and treating.
  6. The guest provided the consequence by not staying and greeting your dog if he didn't sit.

Your dog will learn quicker and the learning will last longer if he is able to realize himself what the rewarded behavior is.
