Searching for a new dog owner
Unfortunately, when the owners take their dogs to these sort of shelters, they frequently hide the real reasons that lead them towards such a decision. More than half of the dogs in any shelter manifest conduct problems, that go from jumping on people, to an aggressive and dangerous behavior. Many of them can be successfully reeducated, especially if the new owner has experience and is willing to dedicate enough time for the animal. Some shelters take too long to find a new adequate home for the problematic dogs. Animals that have changed owners and homes more than once are usually especially difficult to deal with. When you choose the dog that you want, you must specify exactly your requirements to the personnel of the shelter. A puppy or a grown dog? Have you had a dog before? Do you live in an apartment or in a single family house? Are there kids or aged people in your home? Do you have enough time to educate the animal, take it to exercise, brush it, clean it, etc? Ask for permission to visit the chosen dog in the shelter and take it for a walk to get the animal accustomed to you and for you to get somewhat familiarized as well. If everyone would follow these simple recommendations, there would be many more successful adoptions and less unfortunate dogs abandoned in the world.
