Sausage with rice pilaf recipe for dogs
The Kees: Cornelius de Gyselaar was a member of the Dutch liberal Patriot Party. In the eighteenth century he led a rebellion against the Prince of Orange who was the governor of the Netherlands. It was known that Cornelius had a dog for a companion. Due to this the dog was named Keeshond, Kees is the Dutch name for Cornelius, and Hond means dog. This dog actually came to symbolize Cornelius's cause. This breed had been so well considered that it even came out on the city seal of Amsterdam. But after Cornelius's revolt failed, the dog was looked down on for a century. Only later was the Keeshond able to regain his rightful status.
Ingredients
1 ½ tablespoons oil
400 grams sausages, casings removed
1 ½ cups raw rice
½ small baby cabbage, chopped
¾ cup peas
¾ cup sliced carrots
¾ corn kernels
1 liter dog broth (see directions for preparation)
1 ½ tablespoons tomato sauce
Salt
Put a big frying pan on the stove over medium heat. Add in the sausage and brown. Break it up with a wooden spoon or chop it before cooking it. Once sausage is done, remove it and reserve it on the side. Add the baby cabbage and the rice to the frying pan and cook, stirring until the baby cabbage is soft and transparent and rice is opaque. Then, mix in the peas, carrots, corn, tomato paste, the cooked sausage, and the dog broth. Add some salt to it, and cover cooking over moderately low heat until the rice is done cooking. This should take about 30 minutes. Add more dog broth if needed while cooking.
Makes about 2 liters.
