Puppy First Walks with Collar & Leash

Puppy First Walks with Collar & Leash

Don't tighten the collar excessively, that bothers the dog and may uproot some hair, but don't let it too loose either, cause he will get rid of it. The ideal is a space of approximately 1 cm. between neck and collar.

If the puppy scratches it desperately, don't think he has fleas, it's the new collar. He is not use to it, and as he cannot see it, does not understands that "strange feeling" on his neck. The usual reaction is scraping, but won't last more than five minutes. The first contact with the leash should take place at a quiet place. At the start, he can show, in many ways, his dislike: refusing to walk, pulling, trying to bite the belt, or all three at the same time.

A good way of learning quickly is going to walk also with another experienced dog. When the puppy refuses to walk, don't pull him. Show him his little ball and while trying to catch it, he will follow you forgetting the belt.

After some few walks, he will understand that belt means going out and playing, and will get use to it. During the first walks the puppy could get scare of some objects or noises. Don't push him to overcome the obstacle pulling the belt, and talking roughly, but don't rush to carry him in your arms as well; the solution is to talk to him calmly, facing the obstacle in front of him, and trying that he understands there's nothing to fear about.
