Puppy dental pain

Puppy dental pain

Puppy dental pain: Puppy teeth usually begin to grow during the third and fourth week of life, and a puppy that is six weeks usually has all twenty eight baby teeth. These baby teeth normally begin to fall out during the dog's fourth month and then his adult teeth grow in. When a dogs teeth first start coming in it is a painful process and chewing helps to relieve the discomfort they feel. Puppies often have teething problems. For example an adult tooth will come in before the puppy's baby tooth has fallen out making the new tooth grow the wrong way creating yet more problems for future teeth. If this has happened to your puppy, the baby teeth can be removed by the veterinarian and they will usually do this procedure under anesthesia.

Some breeds seem to have more of a problem with this than others and it seems to be a hereditary problem in certain breeds. It is crucial that you as the puppy owner keep an eye out for dental infections, as they tend to spread very rapidly to the other teeth and into the roots as well. When this happens to a dog, it causes a lot of pain, and can cause the dog to lose their teeth. Cavities are much less frequent in dogs than in humans. There are some breeds though, such as the Labrador retriever, which has sensitive teeth, making them more prone to suffer from cavities. If a puppy losses a tooth due to an accident, it is sometimes possible for the veterinarian to fix the problem but this is not always necessary as often the puppy's adult teeth just grow in normally. However, if one of the puppy's adult teeth breaks and the veterinarian does not intervene at the right moment, an infection can set in and cause a lot of pain. If you find a lump or lesion in your dog's mouth, it's very important that you inform your puppy's veterinarian right away.
