Pouncing visitors at the door

How to stop a dog from jumping on visitors or people

An alternate to jumping when greeting visitors is a good solution to the problem with jumping. Dogs don't just grow out of jumping they must be taught that it is just not acceptable behavior. Some alternative greetings might be.

  •

Tell your dog to Sit/Stay or Down/Stay before visitors are allowed to say hello to him.
  • Send your dog to fetch a toy, as this will keep him occupied and your visitors happy.
  • When the front door is open tell your dog to Go to Bed and Stay. This will keep him from running out onto the street, or jumping on the people entering and exiting the door.
