Keeping and Maintaining the Food

Keeping and Maintaining the Food

As we have previously mentioned, dogs are unique and their needs vary according to their age, activity, metabolism, breed, size, and environment they develop in.

Use the instructions on the food packaging as a starting point; determine your dog's weight and feed him accordingly.

Your dog needs to have fresh water available at all times. The amount of water your dog will drink will depend on the season of the year, the kind of activity your dog does, and the kind of diet he is fed. For example, dogs that eat a lot of canned food, which contain a lot of moisture, don't drink that much water.

You must always try to keep your dog in his normal body conditions. In fact, it's preferable to keep them somewhat thin. Obese dogs have a rather unhealthy aspect and they tend to have more health problems and don't live as long.

One meal a day is generally considered to be enough for the average dog, although it might be wise to give two meals a day to more active and bigger-sized dogs. But, remember, the meals have to always be given at the same time everyday.

Dogs don't need a lot of variety in their diet. Neither is it necessary to add supplements to quality commercial dog foods. A dog's appetite – as with adults – can vary. Normally, this doesn't present a problem, unless the dog shows signs of a disease.

If the adult dog is overweight, you should reduce the amount of food you give him and make him do more exercise. It is important, however, that when you reduce the amount of food, that the diet be still balanced and wholesome.

Keep on offering all the water your dog needs and desires and eliminate supplements off of his diet, like fat, table leftovers and meats that provide unnecessary calories.
