How to Understand Dogs Barking

Barking can be a simple expulsion of air or it can be a loud, continuous sound. The more aggressive a dog's attitude is, the more hollowed the barking will sound. Conversely, the higher and finer the barking is, the more fear they feel. Sometimes dogs don't bark with much conviction because they associate a situation with another similar one that would normally indicate a barking answer; it is possible that your dog learned to bark that way in order to attract attention with favorable results. Therefore, a hereditary standard of behavior is developing learned functions.

Dogs sometimes bark for much the same reasons we humans shout. If there is a quarrel between two men, and one of them gives a sharp and direct look at the other, this is a sign that there will be physical violence. If, on the other hand, the two men start shouting and insulting each other, everything will end up in a verbal argument. Barking, in the same way as shouting, has a "probing" function in a quarrel situation.

Among dogs, the barking of a dog that is not in sight says a lot about the dog's size and mood. As the barking constitutes a very useful way to ease tensions, it is very frequent for the dog to bark when he is alone at home or when he wants to go out for a walk or when he expects to receive some food.

It is important to mention that in order to avoid promoting the annoying habit of barking, you have to please the animal letting him out of the room, taking him on a walk down the street or giving him what he wants, but only when he is quiet and silent. When dogs bark out of happiness, it helps them relax. Now, when they bark in front of strangers that disturb them, this kind of barking is considered a "probe" bark.

Growling
Growling is a sign of aggressiveness. Generally, there are no signs of fear when a dog growls. However, the fact that he is making that noise is because there is a circumstance that doesn't let him bite. If that were not the case, the energy that the dog is using to growl could be used to attack directly. The proximity of the adversary usually leads to continuous growling just before attacking.

Whining
Whining is motivated by emotional uncomfort. This kind of manifestation occurs when the dog is deprived of something that satisfies him.

Squealing
This sound is emitted when the dog feels an intense physical pain or a sudden fright. The frequency with wich a dog squeals depends on the intensity of the causing sensation.

Howling
This noise is more common in wolves than in dogs. It is related to sensations of solitude and abandonment. It can even be caused by melancholic music or by another howling dog.
