Finally the time has come to go out for a walk with the puppy on a leash. For a small size puppy, will be enough a conventional leash (leather or nylon) with collar, as well as one of one piece collar, that must fit strongly enough so he can't get rid of it.Big breed's puppies should have adequate leash collars according to their size, but never strangling models. There are also some traditional instruments, totally inadequate for any breed or size, like:

• -the short belt with "handling", that induces the dog to pull;
• the petral, that press dogs to separate elbows, not allowing a swift movement;
• the chain collar that can hurt the owner's hands or the animal's teeth while trying to bite it

Don't ever buy these instruments for company dogs, or for exhibitions, where we will be considered as rookies (in fact the petral is forbidden as the judge cannot make a correct evaluation). Old people are the only ones that can take out dogs with petral (if from small breeds), because of the problem of having to bend down to lift the dog. This is the petral's only advantage. If you have a Nordic dog, for instance a husky, some people will try to persuade you that sled dogs don't use conventional belts and collars, but harness, like in the North Pole. Do not believe it. In first place, harness is the work's dress, and not use daily. To say that a husky or a Samoyed should have harness, is like pretending a Formula One pilot to wear his helmet when going to a restaurant. However, there's another factor to have in mind: the harness has a very different structure than the petral, cause nothing goes behind the dog's elbows. The harness does not impedes movement as the petral. Besides you can't take out the dog with a harness, cause you will not be able to hook the belt. Harness is not designed to take the dog out for a walk, but to pull, and this is what the owner's does not wants from his dog.
