What is a tourniquet? A tourniquet is the procedure by which a hemorrhage is temporarily contained in any extremity. It can be done in case of hemorrhage due to a cut, in an extremity or in the tail. A tourniquet device used in first aid to the injured and wounded, to compress an artery and stop severe bleeding
Its preparation is as follows:
- Use a handkerchief, (tie, nylon belt, sock, panty, large piece of cloth, etc)
- Tie it firmly around the member or the tail, always closer to the body than to the source of the
hemorrhage, making a knot
- To improve the efficiency of the tourniquet, pass a pen through the knot, twirling it several times to apply even more pressure
- Between the tourniquet's knot and the skin we should be able to pass, without excessive difficulty, a finger to prevent irreversible damage that the lack of blood flow can cause (gangrene)
- Every ten minutes, diminish the pressure of the tourniquet for thirty seconds, applying some direct pressure on the wound during these instances to avoid hemorrhage
What are the risks of a poorly done tourniquet? In case the application of the tourniquet exceeds ten minutes in a row without the necessary relaxation to allow the blood flow to continue normally, there may be fatal consequences
Did you know? All dogs have an innate capacity for swimming, but they usually seem that they're drowning in a pool or pond due to the water density and that they get exhausted uselessly trying to look for the way out. It's very important to know that a good first aid kit is not the one that has everything, but one that, besides having everything, has all medicine checked periodically to make sure the expiration date is still far away, substituting any product that doesn't comply with his.
