How to Build a Dog House -Laying the Foundation
Laying the House's Foundation
Materials needed to build a dog house:
Base beams, center joists, and end joists need to be treated cedar wood. As the foundation will be the one part of your dog house that will be getting wet, treated cedar wood must be used so it won't rot over the years.
BASE BEAMS = 3.5" x 3.5" x 4' 7" (8.90cm x 8.90 x 139.70cm)
CENTRE JOIST = 1.5" x 3.5" x 4' 7" (3.80cm x 8.90cm x 139.70cm)
END JOISTS = 1.5" x 3.5" x 3' (3.80cm x 8.90cm x 91.40cm)
1. Lay the base beams, center joist, and end joists on the floor.
2. Fasten beams and joists together using long Philips head wood screws and an electric drill.
Make sure the center joist and end joists are lying on the thin sides so that they are the right height and can be perfectly square with the base beams.
The center joist should be secured last.
dog house Construction Tip: 8 gram screws are heavy enough to secure the foundation together, just make sure the screws are long enough so they fit in both pieces of wood.
Hammer and nails, can be used instead, but when you make a mistake its much easier to fix it with screws.
In order for it to it easier to insert the screw, try drilling thin holes into the wood before hand; it also avoids making too many mistakes.
