Endoparasites and Ectoparasites

Unfortunately, the dog is not the exception, as happens to all vertebrates –amongst them, us humans- and it is also a target of endless kinds of parasites, both internal and external, which are responsible for transmitting mild or serious diseases to the animal. Hence, it is essential to take diverse precautions with the purpose of avoiding the dog of becoming the host for these unwanted parasites.

Correct internal deworming: Nowadays there are several types of medication available in many markets that will help cleaning many kinds of internal parasites at the same time, which greatly simplifies its administration and the success of the treatment. As all dogs are not equally exposed to infections, depending on their habitat and lifestyles, get in touch with a veterinarian and he or she will give you more information regarding this vital aspect of your animal's development.Canine Filariasis already has a preventive system of complete efficiency, given orally in a monthly basis during the activity season of mosquitoes carrying this disease (talk to your veterinarian about this issue as well), always considering weight and size of the dog to treat. However, the treatment should not be performed if a previous test, using blood samples, is not given to create a proper diagnose for the animal. Should this step be skipped, if the animal doesn't have canine filariasis and it's given the antidotes, there could be some critical damage made to the dog's health. Most protozoary organisms described above can be treated and eliminated with the proper use of a previous diagnose, and under veterinarian prescription.  Regarding Canine Leishmaniasis, there is still no cure or vaccine against it, so all that can and should be done is to get your dog under specific diagnostic tests once or twice a year preferably (spring and fall), so that if it is diagnosed in its early stage, the dog can be treated to prevent serious harm to its health. A sick dog in treatment is in no way a hazard to the health of other animals or to the owner's or relative's health, so keep treating your animal the same way you would if it were perfectly healthy.
