It's a common problem for dogs to attack strangers that come into their properties, especially in the case of the mailman. Dogs have a developed territorial sense, and an instinct that impulses them to defend their family. If you encourage a dog that barks when the doorbell rings you will be reinforcing this natural tendency even more. The big problem happens when there is no way to get the dog to stop barking or does not allow anyone else besides those that belong to the family step inside the door of your house. Fear, inadequate socialization, or confusion about which is the dogs place in the house aggravates these types of situations. Therefore you need to try to teach the dog that the mailman is a friend. If you have this problem, allow the dog to see him on the street (not near your door though) or inside the house. Treat the mailman as you would any other visitor so the dog understands this person is not a threat to the family.
