Dogs and Cats

Dogs and cats can enjoy each other's company if they have known each other since they were small. Introduce them when the puppy is less than twelve weeks of age and the kitten less than seven. If one of them is older, let the older one sniff the younger one. You must observe their first encounters, and make sure that the dog doesn't chase the cat.

Competition
An animal that is already well-installed in your home might consider a newly-arrived animal a competitor, especially when it comes to food and water. You can minimize this feeling (and risk) by feeding both animals at the same time, maybe the dog on the floor and the cat at a higher level, or vice-versa; you see.

Reward your dog with praise when he behaves curiously yet lovingly around the dog. If your dog is not aggressive nor dominant with your cat, the cat will end up dominated.

Breed Predisposition
Greyhounds, Whippets and Shepherd dogs are innate chasers; they were born to be fast. Artic breeds like the Husky, and the Spitz are by nature slower, but they have a lot of resistance and can chase an animal for longer periods. Tracking dogs, like the St. Hubert Hound and the Retrievers, on the other hand, don't normally chase other canine breeds.
