The dog vaccination calendar is summarized in the following way:

• At 8 weeks: the first shot must be given CHLP (hepatitis, and parvovirus, etc.);
• At 3 months the second shot of CHLP must be given, also the anti-rabies vaccine.

Getting Rid of Parasites in Dogs

 Worms can be divided in two types: round worms (nematodes) and flat worms (cestods). These are frequent in puppies and they must be eliminated because their presence can cause retardation in its growth or digestive problems. Ninety percent of puppies have the ascaridae parasite. The gestating female can transmit these worms because the larvae go through the placenta and contaminate the fetus.

Round Worms Vaccination: The adult ascarids are located in the dog's digestive tube and feed themselves off the food they find there. They are expelled with the droppings and they are big round and white worms like noodles. The anquilostomas are less frequent. These stick to the intestines walls and nourish off the dog's blood. They produce diarrhea, hemorrhages and anemia.

Flat Worms Vaccination: These larvae develop inside another animal's organism (rabbits, sheep, the flea, etc.). When the dog swallows these it is infected. We have to have in mind that the ascaridae larvae and the dipylidium can also get passed on to humans.

What type of anti-parasite will be choose: It depends on the type of parasite. Therefore, the first thing we must do is make a diagnostic. For this we will need a feces analysis. We will use a specific anti-parasite depending on the type of worm that has allocated inside the dog. There are different types of anti-parasite medicines, for different types of worms. In the case of the dipylidium, we have to treat the dog against fleas because they are the ones that lay the eggs. The products come in different presentations, compressed tablets, pastes in tubes or pastes that are administered with a syringe.

Dog Hygiene

With the purpose of preventing parasite infections, the left over food will be thrown away and the dog's bowl should be cleaned after the animal has finished its ration. The humid food that has not been finished will be stored in the freezer or refrigerator to prevent the development of germs and undesirable bacteria. The food that is stored at low temperature must be covered with a lid or plastic wrapping. This way we will be able to feed it to the dog. A prolonged exposure of dry food to the light, heat or humidity is prejudicial for the food. These must be kept in their original container, or kept in plastic or metal containers. If the biscuits are moldy then we must throw them away and disinfect the container. We will also have to apply a vermifuge every six months.
