How to Teach a Dog Discipline
In order for your dog to be discipline trained even in the most basic of commands he must have a measure of self-discipline. Here is an example of a training session that teaches your dog to check in with you often. A dog who knows that you are the leader and in control will be less likely to cause problems by running away while out. The discipline training game works like this:
- In a quiet room, sit down on a chair with your dog next to you on a leash.
- Ignore your dog until he looks in your general direction, click and treat.
- Ignore again until he looks at you again, click and treat.
- Time one minute and if he looks at you a minimum of six times in this minute then he is ready for a distraction.
- Repeat the first three steps until your dog looks at you at least six times in a minute with a distraction present.
- If your dog looks at you less than two times in the minute then you will probably need something less distracting.
- Every time your dog looks at you at least six times in a minute change the distraction or add more.
- Change the rewards regularly and make them more special for your dog to ensure that he stays motivated and tries harder.
- If your dog does exceptionally well or ignores an extra difficult distraction make sure to reward exceptionally so as to reinforce this desired behavior.
The object of this game is to teach your dog self-control and the importance of focusing on you. When he has master this he is ready to learn other basic commands. Teaching Basic Dog Commands
