Dog Personality and social temperament

Personality and social temperament

Your dog's personality will affect the training you are planning for him. Beginning your training in a quiet environment without multiple distractions will make it easier for you both to succeed. When your dog is calm and focused he learns better. Some dogs that are overly friendly do better training away from the distractions of other people. But it is always important to quickly move your dog from a distraction free environment to a less controlled situation as soon as they catch on to what you are trying to teach them.

Your dog must learn to be obedient to your commands even in the midst of distractions or other people. So training them in these types of conditions is essential. If your dog is shy wait until they have built up their confidence before moving them into higher stress situations. After training them in a distraction free location begin bringing family members or known friends into the training. The goal is for your dog to eventually learn to obey even when they are in an unfamiliar place and there are strangers around.
