Puppy Dog Mouthing and Nipping

Mouthing and nipping is a very common problem for little puppy dogs. You have probably realized that from the moment you got your new little pup that he loves to investigate everything with his mouth. This is normal and is his way of exploring the world. This is also a way a puppy lets you know if he wants something or if he has had enough of something.
Here are some ideas on how to teach your little bitter to stop using his jaws on everyone: If your puppy has a tendency to bite at your hand, finger, ankle or any other part of your body – let him know right away that this hurts you. Tell him, "Ow!" But do not do this in an angry tone, just do it enough to surprise him a bit. Don't every hit your puppy, and don't shake your hand away from his mouth either. Once your pup lets go of you, change your tone of voice right away and let him know that you are proud of him for letting go of you (just make sure to not do this in an keyed up tone, as it might excite him and he will do the same again), it's preferable to use a soft and warm tone while encouraging him. Give him a toy to praise him, or a little treat. Puppies learn quickly this way. It's also good to know that puppy's teeth from approximately three to six months and that during this period, they tend to nibble and bite a lot. Still, this is no excuse for him to bite and nibble at you or anyone. There are different ways of helping soothe your puppy's teething pains. One idea is to give him a little towel that has been wet, wrung out and put in the freezer. This will help relieve his teething pains.

There is one other factor that comes into play while training your pup to stop this nasty little habit, and that is children. It's difficult for a child not jerk away when getting bit by a puppy. Doing this, will only reinforce the problem for the puppy because he will think that they are trying to play with him. It's therefore important to teach your children how to respond to this situation. Show them how they must react. And this way everyone learns together.
