Dog locomotive apparatus problems

All healthy dogs like to run. When their movement rhythm changes, we call it paralysis; the causes are generally hard to determine.

A thorn in your dog's hard pads (or footpads)
Your dog won't put his leg on the floor, or when he does, he whines and whimpers. It's possible that he has gotten a thorn, a piece of glass, or something similar stuck in his pads. Before having the veterinarian thoroughly examining him, check if the cause of the paralysis is related to the foot or leg.

To do so; you must start by grabbing a healthy leg with your hand and firmly press on it a number of time, Initially, the dog will be uncomfortable, but will soon get used to it and won't shake around anymore. From there, grab the leg that is wounded and swiftly and energetically squeeze it. Do you notice a clear reaction of pain? If so, look for the puncturing object, which is sometimes not an easy task. If you find it, extract it with a pair of tweezers.

Dog injuries in the hard pads
When closer examining the hard pads, you realize that maybe they're injured. Open wounds ought to be treated, and even stitched, by the veterinarian. In fact, injuries in the hard pads, don't heal well because the tissue is has poor blood irrigation.

In the case of minor injuries, you can simply bandage the dog's leg. It's always convenient to stuff the space between the toes with cotton, as the dog sweat there. After having sprinkled some talcum, wrap the leg up in gauze.

More important than putting the bandage in the right position is applying the sealing tape. This is important because the dog can tear the bandage with his teeth. A trick is to sprinkle a couple of drops of perfume on the bandage – dogs find the smell repulsive. Another good way to prevent your dog from biting into is by putting a plastic neck on your do. These are sold in any pet shop.

Canine interdigital eczema
If you notice a clear sign of pain, but you can't detect any object, and you have already dismissed the possibility of an injury, pay special attention to the skin in between the pads. It could be a very painful eczema which forms in between fingers. Certain minor alterations (reddening, tiny pimples, stuck hairs, etc) sometimes provoke an obvious paralysis. A good talcum-powder treatment will alleviate the problem – do not forget the bandage!

Important: If this treatment doesn't work, go to your veterinarian.
