Installing the Plywood Roof and Shingles

Dog House Kit Materials:
2 -- 64" (width) x 27" (height) x ½" plywood decking
1 -- bag of asphalt shingles

1. Secure the plywood decking to the roof using wood screws along the rafters.
Make sure the plywood is fits evenly together at the top of the house forming an A-frame.

2. Overlap each of the dog house shingles kit by ¼" to ensure good water run off.
Asphalt shingles normally have an under lapping area and an over lapping area marked clearly.Dog House Kit Assembly

a) Start by laying the top shingle first at the pinnacle of the roof. On the top layer, cut the under lapping area off, and attach just the overlapping area to the top of the plywood using very thin flat head pin type nails. Make sure the shingle overlaps the side of the plywood (eaves) by 1 ½".

b) The second layer starts by sliding the under lapping area of the new shingle under the over lapping area of the shingle above.
You may not be able to push the entire under lapping area beneath the higher shingle, so cut if needed.

c) For the third line slide the shingles underneath the one above. This should be done simply without needing to cut.

d) Continue in the same way all the way to the bottom of the plywood roof.
Once you reach the bottom edge, the shingles need to extend beyond the plywood to create eaves. The eaves should be approximately 4".

3. Do the same on the other side of the dog house roof.

4. Cover the top edging of the A-Frame.
Simply cutoff the under lapping part of the shingle bend the remaining shingle in half and place over the A-frame.

Continue across roof as before attaching it with flathead pin nails.

Tip: There are several different kinds of waterproof roofing which you can use for the doghouse. You can choose which ever one is more available, practical or inexpensive. There are metal and plastic sheeting, wood, asphalt and metal shingles, and asphalt roll roofing which all work just fine. Most of them come with instructions on how to use them properly

Just remember with whatever roofing material you use that the higher laid material must overlap the lower ones.

If you decide to use wood shingles, I'd recommend you lay felt paper on top of plywood roof prior to installing the shingles. This is not needed when using asphalt shingles.

Great! Now that you have completed the roof, it should look a lot like sketch
