Dog Harness, Collars & Leashes

• Walks: All dogs must have a time of exercise everyday. Taking your dog on a walk is a great way for both it and you to enjoy daily exercise. Using a collar and leash on your dog while out is essential to its safety. Unless your dog has been trained to respond every time you command it to come or heel, never take the leash or restraining device off of your dog while out. If you are in a potentially dangerous situation it is imperative that you keep your dog under control at all times. Whether you choose to use a collar and leash of leather or nylon your puppy should have a collar that fits it well. As your dog grows you should buy bigger collars and then once your dog has reached his adult size you can buy the collar and leash which you plan to use on him permanently. The collar should be adjustable and comfortable for your dog to use. If you can easily put two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck this is a good sign that it is not too tight. Never use your dog's leash to punish it as this will cause your canine to associate its leash with something bad. Your dog should be taught that the leash means fun and good times and must be allowed to become accustomed to having it attached to its collar from an early age. Start walking your dog on a collar and leash inside the house when it is still a puppy and then progress out in the yard or some other enclosed area. If your dog has a problem with pulling a body harness will help to avoid your dog choking when pulling against its collar.

• Muzzle: It is a good idea to have a muzzle or harness on hand in cases of emergency, when grooming or visiting the veterinarian. There are special muzzles you can use when taking your dog for a walk or when it is exercising. These permit your dog to breathe easier as they allow your dog to fully open its mouth but not to bite.

• Sweaters: During winter or when the temperature is extra cold it is a good idea to put a dog sweater on your dog when taking it outside. Be careful about leaving a sweater on your dog all the time as if it has long hair the sweater will cause it to become knotted and matted. Also sweaters can cause your dog to become overheated if you are not careful.
