Dog Growls & growling. Why do dogs growl

  • Soft low pitch growl: Threatening growl. It'd be wise to step away and give it some room.
  • Growl that comes from a bark, low pitch: Willing to fight. If the dog is provoked it will fight.
  • Growl that comes from a bark, high pitch: Insecure dog, which would rather not fight, but it will attack if not left alone.
  • Growl combined with a submissive position: Its scared.
  • Intense growl, without showing its teeth: Usually heard when playing with the dog. It is simulating a mock attack and it shows it having fun

Dog Groans and other sounds

  • Soft groans: Pain or fear.
  • Continuous groans: "Give me" or "I want".
  • Sigh: Shows satisfaction if their eyes are semi closed. If they are open it's a sign of disappointment because something didn't happen that it expected or simple boredom.
