Dog Feeding Frequency & Schedule

Dog Feeding Frequency & Schedule

As you may have noticed, not all breeds are alike and they all require of specific needs. Not all breeds go through the same stages while growing from a puppy into an adult. For this reason, it's very important to estimate with as much exactitude as possible, the best moment to start changing your dog's food needs. (You can do this with the help of your veterinarian). This moment will be when your dog will be changing from puppy food to adult food and these kinds of foods are designed for maintaining the dog rather than helping him grow. Some of the things that your veterinarian will determine when changing food are:

  • The size of your dog
  • The physiological conditions, such as if the dog is relaxed or if he likes exercise, if he has any diseases, if the dog is pregnant, if the dog has been neutered or spayed etc.
  • Age

Generally for the bigger breeds, feeding must be done twice a day, leaving the biggest feeding for the morning and the smallest portion for the afternoon. It's best not to feed them at night because some of these breeds have stomach problems. Bloating is a condition that most often occurs in big breeds like Dobermans and Great Danes. Bloat is believed to be caused by the dog eating large quantities of dry food quickly. The Symptoms include dry heaving, discomfort, and a swollen abdomen. The treatment often requires surgery so seek medical assistance immediately because if it is left untreated it is fatal.
