Q: How often should I get my dogs teeth checked?
A: This should be done once a year, when you take the dog to get his vaccinations. If your dog has had problems with his mouth, it's possible the veterinarian will ask you to bring him in every six months. Sometimes oral are symptoms of other diseases.Q: Is it possible for a lost tooth to be re-inserted into the dog's mouth?
A: It is possible as long as the tooth was not fractured in the root and as long as it is done right away. If one of your dog's teeth ever fall out for whatever reason, recover the lost tooth, holding it by the crown (the white part of the tooth) and avoid touching the root, then take the dog (and the tooth) to the veterinarian right away. Your veterinarian will let you know what you need to do afterwards to help the healing process.
Q: I was told I need to brush my dogs teeth, however I'm not sure how to do this.
A: You should start by gently cleaning the front teeth with a special dog toothbrush. Once the dog has gotten used to this, you can then start cleaning the teeth in the back of the dog's mouth (this is done using a longer dog toothbrush). Make sure to never use human toothpaste; there is special dog toothpaste that contains enzymes, which destroy plaque and they are antibacterial and anti-viral. If your dog does not want to cooperate, there are special chewing devices that come impregnated with these same enzymes.
