Dog Corn Pone - Hush puppy recipe
Hush puppy, hush: The name hush puppies originated in the South while people were around the campfires. These biscuits used to be thrown at the dogs to keep them silent. The original recipe for these was deep fried. The recipe above is lighter and very easy to make. Your dog will love eating them and they are great for little treats.
Ingredients
3 cups cornmeal
4 tablespoons corn oil
½ teaspoon salt
1½ cups water
Heat oven to 190 C. and grease a baking sheet.
Put the cornmeal, oil, and salt into a mixing bowl. Bring water to a boil in a small pot and pour over the cornmeal mixture. Make sure you stir this well. Let this mixture cool for about 15 minutes. Wet your hands with a little water or oil and then with your hands make a mush into 3 cm patties. Put the pones onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake for about 30 minutes, until these are solid.
Makes about 26 biscuits.
