Dog and Boredom
If you are under the impression that your dog is bored and that this may be causing the digging problem, you need to take measures to improve this situation. A dog that is bored often times barks, howls, destroys, and of course, digs. Giving a bored dog safe toys to play with often-times helps. Take your dog out; let him play with other dogs in the park. Anything that you can think of to add to his daily schedule will definitely help to improve this situation. And you will be stimulating your dog to get the necessary amount of exercise he may need. Here are some entertaining ideas you can try out with your dog:
- Invest on some Kong toys (there are rubber ones that are hollow in the middle so you can put a snack in them) and stuff them with a treat your dog loves, for example, peanut butter.
- Putting these toys in the freezer often times helps on a hot day.
- Let your dog hang out with other dogs.
- Buy fun toys for your dog and rotate these every week or every few days so that your dog always has a new thing to play with.
- Play Hide and Seek with your dog using little treats and snacks.
- Challenge him with some exercise equipment – ramps, jumping, and tunnels etc.- this will definitely be enjoyable for him.
Dogs are in constant need of exercise, play, and training to be happy and healthy. When you begin to see that he does something in extreme like barking too much or digging, it usually means that he needs more attention and stimulation in other areas. Usually this behavior occurs when a dog is bored or is not getting enough exercise, he might also need to spend more time with his owner.
